Pediatric critical care is a
developing specially all over the world. This caters the need of Pediatric
population beyond the age of one month. The babies below the one-month are
cared for in the NICU, which is well established in our hospital and is one
of the finest NICU's in this part of the country. The K..L.E.S PICU was
established two years ago. The concept is taken from the PTCU of the
hospital of University of Illinois Chicago U.S.A. Two of our faculty members
Dr. V. D. Patil , Professor and Head of Department and Dr. Roopa. M. Bellad, Asso.
Professor of Pediatric have under gone training of 10 weeks each in the PICU
at University of Illinois, Chicago.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at
KLES Hospital and M R Centre is a 12- beaded unit of which six are critical
beds and six are step down beds. The 12 beaded PICU unit offers the most
comprehensive level of care for patients with
respiratory failure, circulatory failure / acute neurologic, deterioration
as well as those who are at risk of developing these and other acute
conditions. The PICU s needy patients. The PICU also has sufficient infusion
pumps, pulse oximeters, oxygen analyzers, in house E.C.G machine and
defibrillator. The PICU patients get the back up of all the investigations
including ABG & also the support of Pediatric Surgeon.
All the staff working in PICU
have undergone PALS certificate course and are trained to tackle any
emergencies. The patients also get the referral support from super
specialties like Neurology, Nephrology, Urology, Cardiology and Cardio
thoracic surgeons around the clock.
With the establishment of PICU for the
last 2 years the patient mortality ha; improved remarkably so far we have
treated 300 patients in (2000 - 2001) PICL and 30 patients out of them for
the year 2000 - 2001 were given ventilator) support. This PICU at K. L E S
Hospital is one of the few pediatric ICU's in Karnataka and is the main
referral centre for pediatric emergency patient's for the practitioners of
North Karnataka & Goa.
