AYURVEDA :
The basic concept of Ayurveda is that the body is composed of three
principles: pittha, kapha and vatha. These are called the tridoshas. Each
dosha is located in a certain organ of the body and is a combination of the
five natural resources (earth, fire, water, air and space or ether).
Depending on the predominance of a particular dosha, an individual falls
into a particular character type and is prone to particular types of
diseases. For example people of the pittha type are said to be hot tempered
and competitive. They are thought to be more prone to ulcers and rashes.
Depending on the analysis of the patient type, Ayurveda advises a particular
diet, treatment and care. There are different types of treatments in
Ayurveda.
Ayurveda Treatises even advocate
different types - specific foods in specific months depending on the
placement of stavs-like spring, Vasanta Rutu, Jestamasa etc.. The great
Indian System doctors like Charaka in Charaka Samita stated in 1000
BC-initiated certain basic tenets of positive and promotive health named as
RASAYANA which is based on i) Achar (Conduct) ii) Ahar (food) iii) Yuayam
(Exercise) and iv) Yoga & Meditation. He concentrated on preventing many
diseases and fostering positive/promotiue and Rehabilitation Health. That is
how, our forefathers, saints, rishis lived healthily for long even 100 years
in the absence of modern drugs, gadgets etc. They also encouraged
Vegetarianism. They related diseases & human behavior based on food habits
like Satvik, Rajasic& Tamasic.
In the postmodern age, the popularity of this vibrant tradition of ayurveda
lies in its, subtle yet scientific approach to heal a person in its
totality. It aims, not only at healing the body, but also the mind and
spirit, at one go. Its unique understanding of the similarities of natural
law and the working of human body, as well as its holistic treatment
methods, help it to strike a balance between the two. This gives ayurveda an
edge over other healing systems. Perhaps that's the reason Ayurveda being
the longest unbroken medical tradition in the world, today.
A special emphasis is mentioned here
about a research project (Ayurvedic Treatment in AIDS Patients - Pilot
study) in the K.L.E.S. Hospital & Medical Research Centre under the
"Alternative Medicine System". The Research Team is lead by the senior
faculty Prof. H. B. Rajashekhar, Director - Health Science Institutions of
K.L.E.S. Society, Belgaum. This will be as per the institutional ethical
regulations.
