Procedure to be followed when Blood is required

When blood is required please come along with a duly labeled sample of the patient (EDTA & Plain) and a duly filled KLE Blood Bank requisition form from the consulting doctor along with a letter from the doctor indicating the patient's particulars and indications for diagnosis.

What we expect

We expect to be

1. Informed at least 8-12 hrs in advance for platelets.

2. Cryoprecipitate and FFP can be given immediately

3. At least 75 % of the components utilized from our blood bank have to be replaced.

4. Not to issue any single unit fresh blood for transfusion. It is obsolete

Please Note

  • For platelets and plasma transfusion to be started immediately after thawing or else efficacy is lost.

  • Platelet Concentrate to be carried under agitation at 22°C.

  • Please transfuse without a micro aggregate filter. Use only a regular transfusion set with filter.

  •  Every unit of platelet (Random donor platelets) will increase the platelet count by 50,000 to 10,000 / cmm.

  • We do not follow directed donation fixed donors blood to be transfused to a particular patient mainly relative.

Donors

Voluntary Blood Donation is much safer than replacement donation. This is because Voluntary blood donor is under no pressure to donate blood and he openly tells of his medical and behavioral history to the Medical officer.

Relatives blood donation and its transfusion is dangerous because

i) There is a rare chance of a reaction occurring called Graft Vs Host Disease when related blood transfusion is given. It is a rare reaction but if it occurs it is fatal and without treatment in 95% of cases. Therefore we discourage relatives blood transfusion.

ii) Relatives are under pressure to donate blood and therefore many times they do not reveal high-risk behavior to the blood bank officer.

Our future plans

  • To be recognized as a Regional Blood Transfusion Centre.

  • To set up advance serological techniques and workups

  • To conduct educational programmes about voluntary Blood Donation, Safe Blood, Advantages of Blood Donation discourage Related Blood Donor Transfusion & Single Unit Fresh Blood Transfusion.

  • Set up Apheresis unit.

  • When Oncology Department begins in the KLE Hospital then set up HLA Lab, BMT processing unit, Peripheral stem Cell Collection. Plasma Exchange, Procedures.

  • Irradiated Blood Component Use
