The Centre has made a
step-by-step progress In the last one year.
1) The first venture was commissioning of an innovative "Diabetes
Health Education Unit" which was inaugurated by Dr. Julius Vaz, The Medical
Director of Novo-Nordisk on 2nd March 2001. Our Diabetes educator who is
specially trained gives supportive care and knowledge like early detection
of diabetes, Self-blood glucose monitoring, attaining the importance of
blood sugar control, symptoms and signs of low & high blood sugars,
prevention and treatment.
2) Later, we have updated a separate nutrition clinic with qualified
Dietitian to cater the exact requirement of individual diabetic patient's
nutrition. Reinforcement of good healthy food habits Is taught to the
diabetics as well as obese individuals. Nutritional counseling and advice is
given to In-patients also, on cross consultancy request by the concerned
consultants.
3) We have started giving Free Human Insulin Supply to children
with diabetes with the profound generosity of Novo Pharmaceuticals. This
year we planned to set up a separate diabetes clinic for children. During
May, on mother's day, A Free summer camp for Diabetic children was
conducted, perhaps first of its kind in this part of Karnataka, where in
more than 27 children participated including the youngest one of 2-months
old diabetic child. The message to the diabetic children and their parents
was very effective.
4) Foot-care in Diabetes Is an essential factor, which accounts
almost 12 percent of the total diabetic cases admitted at our KLES hospital.
A Specialist team has been all-set up with this unique specialty Foot-Care
clinic called "Podiatry-Service". This will definitely help in salvaging
foot problems from amputation, if property diagnosed and treated. This would
be one of a unique facility in this part of Karnataka. The Hon'ble Health
Minister of Karnataka State, Dr. A.B. Malaka Reddy inaugurated the
Diabetes Foot Care Clinic during the World Diabetes Day celebration -
2001. Celebration of the World Diabetes Day 2001 was a successful experiment
with a massive rally wherein personalities of different walks of life
exceeding 1500 people joined the diabetes walk giving mass awareness to the
public about the silent killer disease- "Diabetes".

Diabetes centre to enable the patients to ensure their better blood sugar
control to lead a happy and healthier life. These services are extended to
the other specialities of the hospital on cross consultation and as well as
