The head of the housekeeping department is
called the manager housekeeping who is assisted in the administration of the
department by an assistant manager housekeeping and floor supervisors. Good
interpersonal skills and leadership qualities are essential qualities of the
manager housekeeping.
The assistant manager housekeeping and floor
supervisors effectively manage the housekeeping employees who are a rather
recalcitrant group difficult to handle. The assistant manager supervises not
only the workers but also the supervisors. The supervisors have to take the
attendance of the workers and allot them their specific jobs. They make the
attendance list everyday. This list is sent up to the main administrative
block everyday. They have also got to supervise the workers. Good
interpersonal relations are thus very important here.
Housekeeping employees are largely unskilled
workers employed at the lowest salary level. Their duty starts from 7:30a.m
in the morning. Their attendance is taken by the floor supervisor awl then
they are allotted their duties. Between 7:30a.m and l0:30a.m the workers
help all the wards in the normal cleaning. Then they have a twenty minute
break from l0:30a.m to 10:50a.m. From 11.OOa.m to l:30p.m they go to any of
the wards which requires special cleaning or where the patient has vacated
the room (the sister incharge of the ward will inform the house keeping
department about it). When there is no such special requirement, they are
put to clean any other area which requires cleaning, like; staircases,
service area, OPD's etc. They then have a one hour lunch break from l:30p.m
to 2:30p.m, after which they again continue till 4:30p.m. Then their
attendance is once again taken and they are allowed to go.
The storekeeper assists the manager
housekeeping in her other duties of supplying to the various departments the
different linen that they require. This included the patient dress too. They
also responsible for the staff uniforms. It is the duty of the housekeeping
to get quotations from different stores, tailors etc., and on the approval
of the Medical Director to order for the various items required. It also
has to provide the laundry with replacements for the items condemned every
week, but when the laundry indents for them. The various cleaning items
required by the house keeping department, like soap, scrubber etc., are got
from the main stores, but only try indenting. It is the duty of the
storekeeper to maintain proper accounts of the linen and other items in the
house keeping store as well as those items which are got form the main
store.
Besides this the house keeping department is
also responsible for all the arrangements that are to be done in case of any
VIP visit or any other special functions like, inaugurations, national
festivals etc.
