Therapeutic Nuclear Medicines

1) Radioactive stent has been labelled with P-32 and it is being currently used in the balloon angioplasty. The probable mechanism of action of P-32 in the stent is to prevent endothelial proliferation inside the coronary artery thus preventing restenosis. Apart from this important use P-32 has been successfully used for relieving bone pain resulted due to secondaries in the bones from CA prostate, CA breast etc.

2) Strotium-89 therapy (metastron) has been successfully used to manage bone pain due to secondaries in the bones. These radioisotopes ultimately leads to the changes in the life style of the patient thereby prolonging the life span.

3) Treatment for hyperthyrodism and differentiated cell cancer thyroid with I-131 therapy.

4) Recently the department has pioneered a novel therapeutic procedure i.e. Radiosynoviorthesis which promises relief from painful joint disorders in patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, synovitis and other causes of acute / chronic inflammatory conditions of the joints not responding to systematic administration of anti-inflammatory medicines. We inject various radioisotope for various affected joints i.e. Yttrium-90 for knee joint, Rhenium-186 for shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, superior and inferior tarsal joint, Erbium-169, for small joints i.e. metacarpo or metatarso phalangeal joints. The advantages of this treatment modality are no admission is required. One dose is quiet effective in 80% of the patients. It is cheap as compared to surgical synovioectomy, 80% of the patients receiving these isotope shows significant recovery within 3-4 months time. It is not indicated in patients having evidence of damages and extensive destruction of articular cartilage and adjacent bone pregnancy and lactation.

8(a), 131I Whole Body Survey reveals diffuse metastatic involvements of both lungs region in a case  of papillary  cell Cancer Thyroid.
8(b), After giving high dose I131 therapy (50mCi) there is  significant regression of the metastatic involvements of  both lungs region ,which is evident in Whole Body Survey Scan.
