Activities of Psychiatry Department.

  • Department runs out patient and In-Patient departments.
     
  • Any patient who comes directly or is referred by any other sources seen and assessed.
     
  • The department has all the latest facilities to assess and treat any patient with any kind of Psychiatric illness (except unmanageable, very) violent & disturbed patient).
     
  • The Department also provides a comprehensive consultation-Liaison psychiatric Services to all other Departments in the Hospital.
     
  • The department is actively involved in teaching and research activities. Undergraduate & Post-Graduate medical students, Nursing students and Students from other disciplines undergo training in psychiatry throughout the year.
     
  • Department has a modem well equipped & staffed 30 bed In-Patient facility with special facilities for children, intensive care and acutely disturbed patients. The facility is licensed by State Mental Health Authority, Karnataka.
     
  • The department is well equipped with state of art E C T facility including anesthesia & E E G Monitoring equipments. It also has a 32 channel digital E E G facility.
     
  • The department has facilities for psychological testing like I.Q? personality assessment etc.
     
  • The department offers latest treatment facilities which include Drug treatment. Modified Electro Convulsive Therapy, Psychotherapy, Behaviour & Boifeed Back Therapy and various counseling services.
     
  • The department also offers. Activity-occupation therapy, Group therapy, Play therapy and runs Special Clinics for elderly, students, children etc.

1] Are mental illnesses curable?

Yes most mental illnesses are curable and some can be controlled

2] How are mental illnesses treated?

Mental illnesses are treated by variety of drugs, E C T, Psychotherapy & Behavior therapy techniques.

3] Is Alcohol or Drug addiction a mental illness & can it be treated?

Yes, alcohol and drug addiction or abuse is a type of mental illness. It can be treated The treatment can be very successful if the patient is motivated and co-operative.

4] Is mental retardation a mental illness?

No. Mental Retardation is not a mental illness but a disability. They need assessesment & Various trainings.

5] Is E C T (Electro shock or convulsive therapy) harmful?

No, E C T is a very useful treatment. It is not harmful. It should be used judiciously and where indicated.

6] Can psychiatric illness present with physical complaints?

Yes, Psychiatric illness can present with Physical symptoms. Depressive disorders. conversion disorders often present with physical symptoms only.

7] What are Psycho Somatic illnesses?

Some physical illness worsen or appear secondary to psychiatric problems/illnesses and hence it is important to treat the underlying psychiatric problems.

8] Can children, elderly people suffer from psychiatric illness?

Yes they can & some times more than in Gen population.

9] Can stress cause mental illness?

Yes stress is known to cause mental illnesses.

10] Are mental illnesses hereditary?

Genetic factors are important, but mental illnesses are not always hereditary.

11] Is psychiatric treatment lifelong?

No, in majority of patients the treatment is for a limited period only. Only rarely it is life long.
