Stone Management
This department is one of very few in the country which can boast of
having all modalities of stone management under one roof.
ESWL
It stands for Extra coporal shock wave Lithotripsy. In short it
means fragmentation of stone with shock waves generated outside the body
which pass through the intact skin and break the stone without damaging the
kidney or other
organs.
The machine consists of a shock wave generator, coupling device and focusing
apparatus We have a Dornier Compact S lithotripter which is a
third generation lithotripter having a electromagnetic shock wave generator,
a balloon for coupling and both fluoroscopy as well as ultrasound for
localization of the stone due to which both radio-opaque as well as
radiolucent stones can be treated. No admission and analgesics are required
for this treatment which can be done on outpatient basis.
Ureterorenoscopy This is used to treat ureteric stones with help of
a lithosclast.
We have scopes from sizes 7.5 to I OF with help of which we can reach almost
all the ureteric stones.
Once the stone is identified it is fragmented with a contact lithoclast and
the
fragments drain by themselves by the side of the stent.
This procedures requires a hospital stay of about 2 days.
We also have flexible ureteroscope with help of which we treat calyceal
stones.
PCNL
(Per Cutaneous Nephro Lithotomy); It is a key hole
surgery for the renal stones. In this surgery access is gained to the kidney
through a one centimeter incision in the flank. The stone is identified and
fragmented with a contact
lithoclast and fragments evacuated. The patient stays in hospital 4 days.
The advantage is a cosmetic scar, and early mobilization.
