World SLE (LUPUS ) AWARENESS MONTH, KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital

In observance and celebration of World SLE (LUPUS ) AWARENESS MONTH, KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and MRC held an awareness event on SLE on 15th May 2025.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE, Lupus) is an autoimmune, self-destructive disease due to misdirected immunity. It can affect any organ, and predominantly the reproductive-age group of females.

Col(Dr) Arun Hegde, Prof(Med) & Rheumatologist, Commanding Officer, Military Hospital Belagavi, graced the occasion. He gave an overview of SLE, especially pregnancy-related, where symptoms may improve or worsen. The patient can have a successful pregnancy. Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APLA), a clotting disorder, can complicate pregnancy and hence should be screened for.

Dr. N.S. Mahantashetti, Principal, J.N.M.C., highlighted the importance of noticing even mild symptoms like oral ulcers, which can lead to advanced SLE. Dr. V.M. Pattanshetti, Vice Principal, J.N.M.C.; Dr. Rajesh Powar, Vice Principal; Dr. Rekha Patil (HOD General Medicine); and Dr. Bhavana (Dermatology )
had graced the occasion.

Dr. Pravin Jain, Consultant Rheumatology, discussed investigations and modern treatments. Dr. Sneha A. (PG, dermatology) educated regarding various methods of skin care in SLE, especially sun protection. Dr. Raksha (Geriatric Physiotherapy, PG) highlighted the importance of physiotherapy and physical adaptations in daily living for an arthritic patient. Stress, mood changes, and caregiver burnout are common in SLE, which remains unnoticed, leading to partial recovery despite regular medications. Similar informative aspects were highlighted by Dr. Samrudhi (Psychiatry PG).

The last and best session was interactive, where patients and caregivers shared their experiences. Various presentations of SLE, life-threatening conditions, and successful recovery were discussed. It was an emotional scenario.

This awareness meeting was appreciated for covering various facets of a misleading disease.
