Helping people with diabetes lead healthier, longer lives is both a professional responsibility and a deeply rewarding service. Over the past three decades, diabetes has firmly “arrived” in India-transforming from a relatively uncommon condition into one of the country’s most significant health challenges. Today, India faces a significant diabetes epidemic, with over 100 million adults living with diabetes and another 136 million with prediabetes, making it the country with the second-highest number of diabetics globally, experiencing high prevalence in both urban and rural areas, especially in more developed southern states, with projections showing a continued rise in numbers. A large portion of the population remains undiagnosed, leading to severe complications like heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and amputations and sadly, a large proportion still do not receive timely diagnosis, continuous follow-up, or structured long-term care. This is why India is often described as the “Global Capital of Diabetes.” This growing burden is increasingly visible not only in metropolitan cities but also in rapidly urbanising regions such as Belagavi (Belgaum) and its surrounding rural areas.

With this emerging reality in mind, the KLES Diabetes Centre was conceptualised in late 2000 under the vision of the Chairman and Office Bearers of KLE Society, with the leadership and initiative of Dr. M. V. Jali (Former Medical Director & Chief Executive), who also serves as the Chief Consultant Diabetologist and was a key conceptualizer in establishing the Centre as a dedicated facility for comprehensive diabetes care.

The Centre was formally inaugurated on 2nd February 2001 by Her Excellency Smt. V. S. Ramadevi, the then Governor of Karnataka, marking an important milestone in specialised diabetes services for North Karnataka.

Since its inception, the KLES Diabetes Centre has steadily expanded its scope and impact, delivering practical, patient-centred, and evidence-based diabetes care to both individuals living with diabetes and the wider community. To date, the Centre has registered nearly 20,000 Type 2 diabetes patients and nearing 600 children with Type 1 diabetes as outpatients receiving ongoing diabetes care-including one of the child with diabetes registered in the year 2001 being as young as two months old.

The Centre also provides strong interdisciplinary diabetes support services, including cross-consultation and specialised management during:

• Surgical care and pre, peri and post operative diabetes management
• Gynaecological and obstetric care (including gestational and pregnancy-related diabetes management)
• Cardiology support and pre-interventional diabetes optimization
• Podiatry ( Diabetes foot-care), Eye Care, Nutrition, Prevention, Diabetes Education & Counseling, Stress management, Guided-meditation with tailored yoga services
