Overview

The Department of Paediatric surgery was started in 1994, under the able leadership of Dr Vijay C Pujar. Dr. Santosh B. Kurbet then took over as Head of Department from 01/10/2014 to date.

Our dept in KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and MRC has well established OPD, outpatient-clinic, progressive care wards, Hi-tech-operation-theatres and Intensive-care-Units. We are having OPD, 15 bedded Paediatric-surgical general-ward, 36 bedded NICU(Neonatal-intensive-care-unit) with 7 ventilator-beds shared with neonatology, 14 bedded PICU(Paediatric-intensive-care-unit), 10 beds on free-side shared-with Paediatrics and separate OT for Paediatric-surgical cases.

Pediatric surgery is super-speciality involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults and include subspecialities lik : Neonatal Surgery, Minimally Invasive-Surgery even in newborns and infants (Laparoscopy and Thoracoscopy), Paediatric-Urology and Foetal Surgery.

Paediatric Surgical Services Provided include

Antenatal: Counselling and surgical-treatment is being provided.

Neonatal: Birth-Defects involving-abdomen, thoracic, etc are dealt here-surgically

Pediatric Oncology: The early diagnosis and multimodal treatment

Trauma: Surgical-interventions or conservative-treatment for organ-trauma

Thoracic: Conditions-treated by VATS or open-surgeries.

Hepato-biliary-pancreatic-Surgery and GI-Diseases: Operated by minimally invasive or open surgeries.

The department has made name in Supra-major-Single-Stage-Reconstructive-surgeries for Exstrophy-bladder, abdominal-wall-defects, oesophageal-conditions, biliary, anorectal-malformations and-hypospadias done-by Dr Santosh B Kurbet, Senior Consultant in the department.

Strength of the dept has-been Redo-Surgeries for oesophageal-reconstructions, anorectal-malformations, Hirschsprung's, hypospadias and bladder-redo-surgeries done elsewhere.

The department has also been involved in teaching and guiding Post-graduate students, and doing-various presentations in international and national conferences. The dept also caters for free surgeries under various schemes for poor and underprivileged children with surgical diseases.

  • Neonatal Surgeries including abdominal (stomach, intestinal, pancreas and renal) thoracic, urinary, brain and spine surgeries and other birth defects
  • minimally invasive Surgeries (Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic surgeries. VATS (video assisted thoracic surgeries) in newborns and children.
  • Supra major Single stage reconstructive surgeries for Exstrophy bladder, abdominal wall defects, oesophageal conditions, biliary, anorectal malformations and hypospadias.
  • Bronchoscopy for life threatening foreign body retrievals
  • Emergency surgeries for complicated hernias, intestinal obstructions, G I bleeding, acute appendicitis, cholecystitis, hydrostatic reductions for intussusceptions, etc.
